Melanchthon wrote this defense of the Reformation, and Lutheranism in particular, shortly after the Augsburg Confession was completed. It is an excellent window into this critical time period, clearly defining why they felt reform was needed. And while Melanchton lacked the charisma and bombast of Luther, his writings present a more level-headed expression of the faith.Throughout, Melanchthon’s main concern seems to be pastoral. How can a person truly find peace with God? How can they love God if they are afraid of him? How can they have a confident faith beyond just trusting in the opinions of others? And because these questions are so timeless, Melanchthon’s answers speak to our souls almost 500 years later.
Read this book to better understand why the Reformation was a big deal, why it was far more than theological hair-splitting or irrelevant history from long ago. Read this book to find rest for your soul and a confident foundation for your faith.
I am no Melanchthon or Reformation scholar, but I found Bente and Dau’s transation readable and the production quality met expectations. One weakness is the lack of an introduction to the author and his times. Instead, it just jumps right into the Apology. But for the price, I can’t complain. This is a great, budget-friendly introduction to a theological giant. It was my first exposure to Melanchthon, this book made me want to read much more. Do yourself a favor and give this a read.

This is a great book, but it's lacking a table of contents and page numbers, which can be annoying. Also, the font size is pretty small.
Tough reading, but interesting.
A great book. I am new to Lutheran tradition and this book explains their understanding of the ancient church and the Holy Scriptures.
Written after the initial reformation began and was solidifying its beliefs. The book explains much of how to set a clear course with faith and belief. This is the confession that truly made Luther's protest into a way to follow.
and it is also the most rewarding for those who make the effort.
It is important to read it in context.
This book is the Lutheran response to Roman Catholic Thomist Natural Law theology.
It is a direct challenge and rejection of it.
St Thomas was the most eminent disciple of St Augustine and also Aristotle.
There is no theologian who was ever so brilliant.
The Lutheran Theologians, led by Melancthon and Luther, take up the aristotelian philosophical categories overlayed upon christian theology by first Augustine then taken up by St Thomas , both guided by Aristotle. This writting is a careful rearranging and redefinition of those categories to re align from Augustine-aristotle back to St Paul.
Words such as original sin, law, natural law, concupiscence, etc are all completely redefined by the Lutherans away from Thomas and Augustine back to St Paul, while remaining in the conceptual framework of Aristotle as the common basis for reasoning and organizing of ideas and for Lutherans to engage the scholastics on common ground.
Next to the Small Catechism of Dr Martin Luther, this Lutheran Confession stands as the linchpin of Lutheran Confessions and thelogy. The later Formula of Concord simply cannot be understood without first thoroughly digesting this writing.
My recommendation is to take the time to personally try to outline the argumentative threads in each article. It is sheer brilliance.. it does not turn its back on scholasticism, but rather enters its world completely and implodes its errors from within.
The real difference here between Roman Catholic Thomist Scholasticism and Lutheranism is not justification by faith alone. The start of departure is the definition of what Original Righeousness and the Image of God consists of.
Lutherans Original Righeousness = Image of God = faith in the Works of Christ .
Rome Original Righeousness = Conformity to the Divine Law of God . It is this point where Rome and John Calvin agree and the Lutherans do not.
So the restoration of the Image of God and Original Righeousness for Lutherans is , alone Christ, who is the end of the Law for obtaining righeousness. Once righeousness of faith is restored, the Law is no longer needed. The Law, incarnate in Christ, becomes existentially who we are, incarnate now in new man.
For Rome and Calvin Christ is the vehicle to return to..... the Law. Ultimately then the Gospel serves the Law.
